The Pacific Northwest truly comes alive in the summer. With sun-kissed days and refreshingly cool nights, it’s the ideal time to explore this stunning region. One of our favorite experiences was a day trip into Seattle, Washington—an inviting city that blends natural beauty with a revitalized urban charm.
We stayed just across the water in the charming town of Poulsbo, often called “Little Norway,” and took the scenic ferry across the Puget Sound into downtown Seattle. I highly recommend walking onto the ferry rather than driving. It’s an experience in itself: grab a warm bowl of clam chowder or chili from the galley, find a seat with a view, and soak in the stunning scenery as the Seattle skyline gradually comes into view.
Once docked, you can easily explore on foot, but the city’s light rail and ride-share options are available if your plans take you further inland. Our adventure began with a leisurely walk along the newly revitalized Seattle waterfront. The harborfront is clean, vibrant, and family-friendly, with wide sidewalks perfect for strolling. You’ll find plenty to enjoy—from waterfront swings and scenic benches to the Seattle Aquarium and the towering Seattle Great Wheel.
A short walk uphill brings you to the legendary Pike Place Market, one of the most iconic landmarks in the Pacific Northwest. This bustling, historic market is a feast for the senses. You’ll be met with vibrant stalls overflowing with fresh flowers, artisan goods, handmade crafts, and some of the freshest seafood you’ll find anywhere. The colorful floral bouquets—offered at incredibly reasonable prices—fill the air with their sweet fragrance, making it a joy just to browse.
No visit to Pike Place is complete without stopping by the Original Starbucks. Be prepared for a line that stretches down the block, especially in the summer. Just across from the main entrance to the market, don’t miss the famous fish-throwing vendors—a delightfully quirky and energetic tradition that never fails to draw a crowd. Pro tip: stand back a row or two unless you’re ready to be splashed by a flying salmon!
For lunch, we grabbed a table at Old Stove Brewing Co., tucked within Pike Place Market with panoramic views of Elliott Bay. The menu is hearty and satisfying—think crispy fish and chips, artisan pizzas, juicy burgers, and an excellent selection of craft beer brewed on site. The setting is relaxed and welcoming, perfect for families or anyone looking to soak up the Seattle summer vibes.
If you're feeling adventurous, head to Bubble Gum Alley for a quirky photo op or book a harbor cruise to learn more about the city’s maritime history. Whether you're people-watching on a bench, enjoying the ocean breeze on the ferry, or diving into the culture and flavors of the market, Seattle offers something for every traveler.
Seattle has done a fantastic job transforming its downtown and harbor areas into safe, walkable, and engaging spaces. Whether you’re a solo traveler, a couple, or visiting with family, it’s a city that invites you to slow down and explore.
Tip from a Travel Advisor: Plan to spend a full day in Seattle—and wear good walking shoes. From ferry rides to fish markets, you’ll want to take in every moment. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
